Capitalism and Xenophobia: How Unchecked Corporate Power Fuels Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

In 2016, two seismic political events revealed a global crisis: Britain voted for Brexit, and the U.S. elected a president who promised a border wall. Both campaigns blamed immigrants for economic woes, igniting xenophobic policies worldwide. Yet this narrative is dangerously flawed. The real culprit behind stagnant wages and job losses isn’t immigration—it’s unregulated capitalism, where multinational corporations (MNCs) prioritize profits over people while governments fail to rein them in. This article dismantles the xenophobic myth and exposes how: MNCs exploit weak labor/environmental laws in developing nations, killing jobs in the West Social democracies (e.g., Scandinavia) prove regulated markets outperform extreme capitalism Historical amnesia blinds nations to immigration’s role in their success Part 1: The Immigration Fallacy 1. The Hypocrisy of Wealthy Nations U.S./Australia/Canada: Built by immigrants; 40% of Fortune 500 companies founded by immigrants or their children (For...

Colonial Organizations: The Urgent Need for Democratic Leadership in African Workplaces

The play Amezidi by Said A. Mohamed is more than a historical drama—it is a mirror reflecting the persistent colonial-era management practices still plaguing African workplaces today. Set in colonial Tanzania, the play depicts a workers’ strike undermined by union leaders who betray their colleagues for personal gain, showcasing the toxic "divide and rule" tactics employed by oppressive management. Decades after independence, many African organizations—from factories to universities—still operate under these archaic, authoritarian structures. This article argues for a radical shift from colonial-style management to democratic, ethical leadership, particularly in professional environments like academic institutions. Research consistently shows that cohesive, participatory workplaces outperform authoritarian ones. Yet, as seen in Kenya’s local colleges and beyond, the legacy of Theory X management and divide-and-rule strategies continues to stifle productivity, innovation, and ...

The Crusades

The crusades were a series of military campaigns the Catholic church carried out between the 11th and 15th centuries against Muslims, pagans, and church opponents (Lock, 2006). Over the past few decades, historians have investigated the occurrence and motivations for the crusades. Some of the motivations for the crusades identified include the need to: capture Jerusalem, free and defend Christian territories, and protect Christians living in non-Christian territories. However, questions still arise on whether these were the motives of the religious and political leaders who called for the crusades or whether they also had particular hidden agendas (Lock, 2006). This article examines the evidence of the first crusade to determine whether it was meant to save Christianity or exploit them for personal gains.      the crusaders on a battleground    The First Crusade (1096-1099)    Pope Urban II   Pope Urban II was the first religious and pol...

Being a Mom

I vividly remember having problems with my mom during my teenage years. I was outgoing and loved all the fun that came with it. Unfortunately, my mom, very bold in character and a staunch believer, was always creating impediments to my crazy lifestyle back then.   She ensured that I attended our old Baptist church every Sunday and sat in its front row beside my siblings. I was not too fond of her domineering character over me. Moreover, she ensured that I was acquainted with many members of our congregation, who often helped her check on me and my character. That is why she always knew where and what I was doing. She only slept once I was back from the late-night parties. We quarreled a lot. Today, I consider all these cherished memories, which I greatly thank her for creating with me. Ability to worry An African proverb says, “the one who loves you is the one that fights you.” I came across it while reading African literature some years ago. I never understood it back then, b...

The Enduring Value of Gold: A Timeless Investment

In an era dominated by digital currencies and complex financial instruments, gold remains a steadfast pillar of wealth preservation. Many question its relevance, dismissing it as a relic of a bygone monetary system. Yet, despite losing its formal role as currency, gold continues to hold immense value—not just as a commodity, but as a shield against economic uncertainty. There are four primary ways to invest in gold, each with its own advantages and drawbacks, but the underlying truth remains: gold endures as one of the most reliable stores of wealth across generations. The most direct method of investing in gold is through physical ownership—buying coins, bars, or bullion. This approach offers the tangible security of holding a precious metal, but it comes with logistical challenges. Storing gold safely requires secure vaults or safes, and insuring it adds another layer of cost. Theft, damage, or loss are constant concerns, making physical gold a high-maintenance investment. Still, for...

Marketing to Children

Marketing to children is the act of preparing and displaying adverts that directly target children. These adverts aim to increase children's demand for the advertised goods and services. Recently, business organizations have increased their expenditure on the advertisement to children. Businesses are now estimated to spend about $17 billion on marketing to children (Marketing to Children Overview, n.d.). This trend has become so worrying that many people have begun to question this practice by businesses (Clay, 2000). It is unethical for businesses to target children when advertising their products. This practice should stop.    Unnecessary Pressure on Parents Advertising to children puts unnecessary pressure on parents (Clay, 2000). When adverts that target children reach the children, children usually demand the advertised good or service from the parent. They will keep nagging the parents for the advertised good or service. The innocent nature of children makes them u...

Pranayama

Our lives are characterized by daily stresses that sometimes make living painful. Many life situations make us angry, stressed, and sad. They directly affect our mental health, affecting our physical and social health. We know that when we are angry, stressed, or sad, we do not eat or socialize positively with our friends, families, and coworkers, which should not be the case. Fortunately, we have the pranayama to help us release harmful stress and anger while calming us, lifting our spirits, and improving our mental clarity. Through pranayama, we are not only able to restore mental stability, but we are also able to improve and maintain our physical and social health.  Origin of Pranayama The Term Pranayama combines two Indian words, “Prana” and “Ayama.” According to the ancient Indian seers,  Prana  is a force that flows through our body and keeps us alive. We mainly get  Prana  through breathing. When we stop breathing, we do not get  Prana , which...

Say NO at Work

The workplace is similar to any other social environment where we encounter many situations. Some situations make us feel comfortable, while others make us feel uncomfortable. Uncomfortable situations make us stressed and hinder our overall productivity in the workplace. Therefore, it is essential to avoid them to protect our health and productivity in the workplace. Fortunately, a simple “NO,” well-said, is one of the best ways to avoid these situations that make us uncomfortable.  Situations That Need a No    The boss needs you to do more work.    Here are examples of situations in the workplace that we need to learn to say “NO” to: 1. Your boss assigns you a task that does not fit your job description. This assignment will likely take much of your time as it hinders you from performing the duties outlined in your job description.
